Cornelius Tappen House
10 Crown Street, Stockade District, Kingston, Ulster County
The salt-box style Cornelius Tappen House, also known as the Vandenburgh-Hasbrouck House, was constructed in circa 1704, making it one of the oldest buildings in historic Stockade District of Kingston. The house is named for Cornelius Tappen, a local surveyor and deputy county clerk who resided in the house for many years. During the American Revolution Cornelius Tappen is credited with saving many historical town records when the British Army burned Kingston in 1777. The building would later serve as Kingston’s first post office. Today historic building is home to The Tappen, a popular local restaurant.
