Franz P. Roggen House
Four Corners, Stockade Historic District, Kingston, Ulster County
The Kingston Stockade District intersection at Crown and John Streets is the only intersection in the United States where pre-Revolutionary War-era stone houses are located on each of the four corners. The four houses include the Franz P. Roggen House, the Matthew Person House, the Kingston Academy, and the Matthew Jansen House.
The historic Dutch Colonial house (pictured here) was built in 1750 by Swiss immigrant Franz P. Roggen. The interior was destroyed in 1777 when the British Army burned Kingston during the American Revolution. Between 1777 and its 1800 reconstruction, legend has it that the interior ruins of the home were used as a gallows site, leading many to believe the building is haunted. The house has since been used as a home and for a variety of commercial uses, and is now home to a financial firm.
