United We Stand
Kingston, Ulster County
Located in the Stockade District of Kingston, this faded and cracked window decal depicts the American flag with the words “United We Stand.”
The American use of the phrase “United We Stand” began with John Dickinson, a Founding Father of our country, who used it in his 1768 patriotic ballad The Liberty Song. The song was published in a number of widely read newspapers in Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. The song would become a popular anthem throughout the American Revolution. The Liberty Song is often considered to be one of America’s first patriotic songs. The fourth verse:
“Then join hand in hand, brave Americans all,
By uniting we stand, by dividing we fall;
In so righteous a cause let us hope to succeed,
For heaven approves of each generous deed.”
