Eye

B. Millens & Sons, Rondout District, Kingston, Ulster County

B. Millens & Sons was a recycling and scrap yard operation located along the Rondout Creek near the Rondout Historic District in Kingston. The company was originally founded in 1888 and had operated at the East Strand location since the 1940s. The company had a long history of environmental violations. Since the company stopped using the 2.2-acre property in November 2012, the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has classified the site as a Class 2 hazardous waste site citing excessive contamination levels for PCBs, arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury and benzene. The site has historically been used for cement works, storage and vehicle maintenance. The company now operates as Millens Metal Recycling in a facility on Kieffer Lane in the town of Ulster.
