Stockade District, Kingston, Ulster County

The Leventhal building in the historic Stockade District of Kingston was constructed in 1888. For over 90 years the building was home to the family owned Leventhal business, first as Leventhal Furs and later as Leventhal Furs and Fashions. Founded in 1900, the Leventhal business was last managed by Sylvia Leventhal (1918-2010), an active member of the Kingston community. With Sylvia’s retirement, the business closed its doors in 1992 and the building was sold.

The historic Stockade District is an eight-block area bounded by North Front Street to the north, Main Street to the south, Green Street to the west and Clinton Avenue to the east. The streets are laid out today just as they were in 1658 when the village was formed. The district contains eight 17th century stone houses, another dozen buildings from the 18th and early 19th centuries, plus many other architecturally appealing buildings.
