Front View of Office at Sugar Maples, Maplecrest, N.Y.
The Sugar Maples was a popular resort in the northern Catskills. The resort was founded in 1925 by Sherwood “Gus” Moseman. The inscription on the reverse side of the postcard reads: “A corner of the 30 acre landscaped lawn showing the sun-deck and patio at the Sugar Maples. Maplecrest-in-the-Catskills.” The postcard was published by the L.L. Cook Company located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The postcard is dated 1965 although it was never mailed.
A 1927 advertisement for the Sugar Maples read: “A quiet, clean, moderately priced place, easily accessible, situated amid beautiful natural surroundings, offering good meals, comfortable rest, attractive amusements and pleasant associations.
Tennis, quoits, croquet-gold, saddle horses, bathing and fishing. Spacious lawns, hammocks, steamer chairs and librarys. Electric lighted, plumbing, home-cooking. Real rural charm and hospitality; Christians, $15 to $20 per week. Fare from New York, $4. Write Maplecrest, Greene Co., N.Y.” (The Chat. Brooklyn, New York. June 11, 1927.)
The hotel closed in the 1990s and is now home to Sugar Maples Center for Creative Arts.
