The Heermance Memorial Library is located on Ely Street within the Reed Street Historic District in the village of Coxsackie. The library was founded in 1908 upon the passing of Eleanor Christina Heermance (1820-1907), a prominent local resident. In her will Miss Heermance, with the intent of creating a library for the village that she loved, donated her home to that purpose and created a trust fund for the library’s operational expenses. The library has faithfully served Coxsackie residents for over 100 years. The library building was originally constructed around 1828 as a personal residence for Ralph Barker, the first postmaster of Coxsackie, and was later sold to William Van Bergen Heermance, founder of the first bank in Coxsackie. The building is described on its application for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places as “two stories, wood, late Federal, clapboards, decorated cornice, Greek Revival parapets added”. Visit the library website at www.heermancelibrary.org for more information.
