Clements Lake Farm, Liberty, N.Y.

This vintage postcard of the Clements Lake Farm at the village of Liberty, New York was published by Edmund L. Tichenor located at Middletown, New York. The postcard was manufactured in Germany. It was never mailed.

According to a 1923 advertisement the Clements Lake Farm had an occupancy capacity of 50 people, was located 1 ½ miles from the nearest railroad depot and operated from June to October. The boarding house was managed by J. N. Clements. In the Summer Homes Among the Mountains the Clements Lake Farm House advertised itself: “guests taken to and from the depot free of charge; house pleasantly situated on the main road between Liberty and Liberty Falls, commanding a very fine view of the surrounding country; table liberally supplied with fresh vegetables, eggs, milk and good butter. Terms, references and descriptive circular on application. Seventeenth year.” The Clements Lake Farm House closed in 1936 after 64 continuous years as a boarding house. The property remained in the Clements family and became a dairy farm.

An article titled “Clements Lake Farm House” by Delbert Van Etten, Liberty Historian, in the Liberty Evening News on April 27, 1978 offers a great history of the once popular boarding house and the history of Clements family.
