Main Entrance to Onteora Park, Catskill Mountains

In the late 19th century many well-to-do Catskills visitors began seeking alternative lodging opportunities to the large summer hotels. This brought about the concept of private residential parks where like-minded individuals of shared cultural and social backgrounds owned their individual summer residence. Private residential parks included Twilight Park (1887), Onteora Park (1887), Santa Cruz Park (1889), Sunset Park (1889) and Elka Park (1889).
