Stopping at the Lighthouse

The historic Saugerties Lighthouse, located at the mouth of the Esopus Creek on the Hudson River, was constructed in 1869. The lighthouse was in continuous operation until 1954 when it was decommissioned and the lights were automated. However, without a permanent keeper, the lighthouse quickly fell into disrepair and by the 1980s was close to being demolished.

Fortunately, in 1986, the Saugerties Lighthouse Conservancy acquired the lighthouse and managed its renovation. Today, the lighthouse grounds are accessible year-round from sunrise to sunset via an easy, flat ½ mile walk along a nature trail (be sure to check the tide tables). Seasonal tours of the lighthouse interior are available, and the lighthouse also operates year-round as a 2-room bed-and-breakfast.
