What Once Was
Greene County
Drive around the Catskills countryside and you will surely notice the old abandoned houses, farms, barns, bungalows, hotels, boarding houses and businesses that dot the country landscape. The reasons for abandonment are many including the changing agricultural business, farmers who could no longer support themselves with small family operations, declining local population as people moved out of the country in the search of work and declining tourism as people sought out (with improved highways and air travel) more exotic destinations. Abandoned buildings are perhaps most common in Sullivan County, home to the once popular Borscht Belt, but can be found throughout the Catskills region.
