Vintage postcard by Otto Hillig of the rural hamlet of Callicoon Centre.

Callicoon Centre, N.Y.

Callicoon Centre is a rural hamlet within the town of Callicoon in Sullivan County, New York. The town takes its name both the Dutch and Indian word kalkoen, meaning turkey. The area was first settled in 1814 by William Wood and his sons Gerrett, Edward and David.

The elevated view of the hamlet, its farms and rolling hills was taken by famed photographer and adventurer Otto Hillig of Liberty, New York. The postcard was never mailed.
