Sand Lake near Shandelee, N.Y.
Sand Lake, more officially known as Sand Pond, is located several miles south of the hamlet of Livingston Manor near Shandelee in Sullivan County, New York. The lake was once home to several resort hotels including the Lakeside House (formerly the Chestnut Grove House), the Lake Rest Hotel and the Sand Lake Hotel.
The Lake Side House was established in 1900 by Mr. and Mrs. John Fries and at first operated as a farm boarding house with accommodations for 35 guests. It would eventually pass on to the son-in-law and daughter of the founders, Albert and Anne Menges. After World War II Harold Menges and his wife Della Judson, who had married in 1950, took over ownership of the Lakeside House from his parents, Albert and Anne Menges. Harold, nicknamed “Ham,” had graduated from the Pratt Institute and had served in the US Navy during World War II in the Pacific Fleet. Della was a graduate of the Long Island College Hospital School of Nursing. Ownership of the Lakeside property changed hands several times, with the buildings falling into disrepair and eventually being demolished.
