Morning Fog at the Mohonk Testimonial Gateway
The Mohonk Testimonial Gateway, more commonly known as the Mohonk Gatehouse, was built in 1908 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Albert and Eliza Smiley, founders of the Mohonk Mountain House. The gatehouse marked the former eastern entrance to the Mohonk House, providing visitors with a naturally pleasing introduction to the resort. Visitors would officially begin their vacation by passing under the 4-story tower and drive-through archway to travel along picturesque carriage roads, at first by horse and carriage and later by automobile. The Gateway, originally designed to house a gatekeeper and family but was later used as housing for Mohonk employees, served as the entrance until 1935.
