Fawn’s Leap, once known as the less poetic Dog’s Hole, is a quaint, fabled waterfall spilling through a narrow gorge along the lower Kaaterskill Creek. The falls are approximately 30 feet tall, with the middle section taking on the appearance of an adventure park water slide. It is a locally popular swimming hole and cliff jumping location for the young, old and, unfortunately, the sometimes intoxicated.

The Mountain Top Historical Society sign located on Route 23A across from the waterfall describes the area’s folklore: “According to legend, a fawn pursued by a dog tried to jump the chasm and failed. The rock formation and waterfalls has been a favorite of artists and photographers for centuries.”
