Vintage postcard of the Rip Van Winkle Trail as it travels through Kaaterskill Clove in the northern Catskills.

Down the Clove, Rip Van Winkle Trail, Catskill Mts., N.Y.

The Rip Van Winkle trail, the name given to the beautiful section of Route 23A, traveled west from Kiskatom, Palenville, rising through Kaaterskill Clove, and on to Haines Falls, Tannersville, Hunter, Lexington, and into Prattsville, where it joined the Mohican Trail. The highway “trails” through the mountains were created in the early 20th century as part of marketing campaigns to encourage travelers to visit the attractions and accommodations of the region.

The postcard was published by the Kingston News Service. The postmark on the reverse side shows that it was mailed in 1949.
