Lenape Longhouse

The Lenape Longhouse at the Mohonk Preserve is a replica of a traditional longhouse, which was a long, wooden structure with a curved roof, traditionally built with pole frames and bark covering.

The structures, which typically spanned from 60 to over 100 feet long, often housed multiple families and served as centers for community, cooking and ceremonial life. Families slept on raised wooden platforms built along the walls, while the rounded ends of the longhouse were used to store food like corn and squash.

The replica Lenape Longhouse was first constructed in 1992, and was reconstructed in 2006 using more durable materials. The longhouse is built with modern materials, but mimics the historical design.

The longhouse is used for outdoor education classes to demonstrate traditional native culture, including Native American history, traditional housing and how the Lenape lived off the land.

The longhouse is easily accessible from the Spring Farm trailhead at the Mohonk Preserve.
