The Kelly family were among the first settlers in the Halcottsville area. David Kelly, born in Putnam County, settled here as a pioneer farmer in the early 1800s after finding his way into Delaware County by following the blazed trees in the forest. He decided to take up land in what is now Halcottsville, where he lived the rest of his days. His 130 acres of land were originally little more than wilderness, but the place was eventually surrounded by houses, barns and cleared farm land. Besides a farmhouse David, with John Halcott, built a grist-mill by building a wooden dam on the East Branch of the Delaware that formed Wawaka Lake. David had served as a private in the Revolutionary War. David Kelly died in 1848 at 97 years of age and is buried at Old Halcottsville Cemetery in Halcottsville, New York.
Although only a few houses remain today, the small hamlet of Kelly Corners, located between Margaretville and Halcottsville along Route 30, was also named for the Kelly family. The hamlet was once a bustling community with a post office, general store, blacksmith, two creameries, a cheese factory and a railroad depot along the Ulster & Delaware line.
In 1913, David Meade bought the farm from the Kelly family. The Meade family operated the farm for about 50 years through the 1960s. They welcomed summer boarders and called the place Pleasant Home Farm. In 1981, Alta Industries acquired the Round Barn and property, and donated the barn and four acres to the Erpf Catskill Cultural Center which reconstructed the deteriorated barn in 1988.
The Kelly Round Barn is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for being “architecturally and historically significant as one of the earliest entirely round barns in the state and as one of the first examples to feature a round silo at the center.”
Today, the fully restored Kelly Round Barn is home to the popular Pakatakan Farmers Market, which features local farmers, craftsmen and artists selling their wares. Customers can buy locally grown or locally made produce, breads, jelly and jam, maple syrup, meats, fish, and cheeses, as well as flowers, plants, arts and crafts, handmade soaps and much more. The market is open Saturdays from mid-May to November.
