The original Saugerties Lighthouse was constructed in 1835 by the U. S. Lighthouse Establishment to mark Hudson River shoals and the entrance to Saugerties Harbor on the Esopus Creek.
The original lighthouse was destroyed by fire in 1848, but was rebuilt by 1850 on the old site. At this time, four mineral oil lamps replaced earlier whale oil lamps.
The current lighthouse was built in 1869 to replace the prior one that had been damaged by ice floes. The lighthouse was in continuous operation for 85 years, until 1954, when it was decommissioned by the U. S. Coast Guard and the lights were automated. Without a permanent keeper, the lighthouse fell into disrepair and by the 1980s it was close to being demolished.
In 1986, the Saugerties Lighthouse Conservancy acquired the lighthouse and managed its renovation. After 36 years of darkness, the lighthouse was officially re-dedicated as an aid to navigation on August 4, 1990. The Saugerties Lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Today, the lighthouse is accessible year-round from sunrise to sunset via a flat 1/2 mile walk along a nature trail (be sure to check the tide tables). Seasonal tours of the lighthouse interior are available. The lighthouse also operates year-round as a 2-room bed-and-breakfast.
The lighthouse is located at 168 Lighthouse Drive, Saugerties, New York. Visit the lighthouse website at www.saugertieslighthouse.com for more information.
