Husted Hollow Schoolhouse

Early records show that School District No. 10 in Kortright kept a one-room schoolhouse beginning in 1819. That first year the school was in session for six months, of which four months and ten days of that time were under the supervision of an approved teacher. Records show that during this time 70 pupils were registered, 64 of whom were between 5 and 15 years of age.

The current Husted Hollow Schoolhouse building was built around 1870. The school was located in Husted Hollow in the town of Kortright. The school served the community until 1933, when it closed due to state-wide school district consolidation. The last teacher at Husted Hollow was Grace Martin and the last student was Alma Shelley, who was in 6th grade at the time.

The Husted Hollow Road name was later changed at some point to Crowe Road after the Rural Electrification Act mapped the electric layout for area rural families.

The Husted Hollow Schoolhouse building was moved in 1967 to the property of the Delaware County Historical Association (DCHA) in Delhi, New York, and has remained there ever since. The schoolhouse was donated to the DCHA by James Davis and Robert McDowell, an attorney in Stamford.

In addition to the schoolhouse, the DCHA is also home to the Gideon Frisbee house, the Woodin blacksmith shop, the Amos Wood gun shop, a tollgate building, the Frisbee Family Cemetery and a nature trail.

The museum hosts historical exhibitions and special events throughout the year. Visit the DCHA website at www.dcha-ny.org for more information on the buildings, visiting hours and the history of Delaware County.
