The Second Old School Baptist Church of Roxbury is located along Route 41 south of the village of Roxbury near the crossroads hamlet of Stratton Falls.
The church was formed from the First Old School Baptist Church at Batavia Kill on May 1, 1816. The first pastor was Elder William Warren, who was also pastor of the first church. Its first officers were Jothan W. Scudder, deacon; and J. Root, clerk. At its organization, 53 members of the first church served as the congregation for the new church. For its first 17 years, the newly formed congregation met at Scudder’s Schoolhouse.
On January 7, 1832, it was decided to erect a meeting house for the now established congregation. Deacon Scudder, Ruben Every and Ezra Stratton were appointed to serve as trustees to oversee the construction of the new church building. The historic church was built using the traditional meeting house plan that was characteristic of the Old School Baptist faith.
Locally known as the “Yellow Church,” construction on the Second Old School Baptist Church began in 1832. The first services were conducted in the new building in April 1833.
Early pastors of the church included Elder William Warren, who served from 1816 to 1821; Elder Platt, who served from 1821 to 1823; and Elder David Mead, who served from 1823 to 1845 and was the pastor at the time of the church’s construction.
Located adjacent to the church on the south side is the O. S. Baptist Church Cemetery. Funerary markers are laid out in several long rows arranged in a north to south direction, with each of the monuments oriented to the west. The cemetery “provides a chronical of funerary art and customs associated with the community and this specific congregation.”
