The Bethel Woods Center for the Arts is scenically located just north of the hamlet of Bethel in Sullivan County, New York.

The Bethel Woods Center for the Arts is home to the site where the historic Woodstock Music & Art Fair took place on August 15-18 1969. The concert featured 32 of the most famous musical acts of the era including the Grateful Dead, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Janis Joplin, The Who, Jimi Hendrix and many more. Over 400,000 concert-goers made their way to the rural country hamlet for the show. At the time, it was the largest concert audience ever assembled. The Woodstock Music & Art Fair It is widely considered to be one of the pivotal moments of the 1960s and in the history of music.

Today, the original stage area of the Woodstock concert and the adjacent portions of the concert field remain undeveloped and are open to visitors. The site has seen relatively little change in the years since the concert, and topography, views, tree lines, stone walls, field patterns, forests, open space, streams, and ponds present in 1969 can be discerned in the landscape today. When visiting the site today, you can almost envision the crowds and hear the music.

In addition to the Woodstock site, the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts is also home to a concert pavilion where bands regularly play and a wonderful museum dedicated to the 1969 Woodstock festival and the legacy of the 1960s.

A Woodstock monument called “Peace and Music” was created and installed at the location of the original festival by local sculptor Wayne Saward (1957-2009) in 1984 to mark the 15th anniversary of the concert. The 5 1/2-ton concrete and cast iron monument displays two plaques that list all the on-stage performers from the 1969 concert and includes a high-relief design showing the famous original catbird on a guitar design that was used on the Woodstock concert posters. The monument is located on a rise near the corner of Hurd Road and West Shore Road with a view of the entire concert field.

The Woodstock Music Festival Site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as “the site of one the most important cultural and social events of the second half of the twentieth century,” “the definitive expression of the musical, cultural, and political idealism of the 1960s,” and “a watershed event in the transformation of American culture.”

The Woodstock site draws thousands of visitors every year, each seeking to reach back in time to feel, in some way, the enduring Woodstock spirit.
