Catskills: Top Region

Lonely Planet, the popular travel guide website and publisher, recently released their “Best Places To Go in 2019” lists. Categories included Top Countries, Top Cities, Top Regions and Top Values. The worldwide list is based on nominations from editors, researchers, locals and influencers. The pool of nominations is then then culled down and ranked in a convenient Top 10 list by a panel of Lonely Planet judges.

The Catskills, somewhat to my amazement despite my love for the region, placed second in the “Top Regions” category. In the world. With 195 countries. And anyone’s guess of how many “regions”. Here is what Lonely Planet had to say about the Catskills:

“Fifty years ago in the heart of the Catskills, the Woodstock Festival became one of the watershed events that defined a generation. Although the flower children may now have grandkids of their own, the free-spirited ethos lives on in the indie-loving towns of this picturesque region in upstate New York. In recent years there’s been an influx of creative farm-to-table restaurants, bespoke breweries and distilleries, and a growing array of arts collectives and high-profile concert venues. Speaking of concerts, August 2019 is the time to visit if you want to be a part of history – revelry and music will once again be in the air for the 50th anniversary of Woodstock.”

“There is never a bad year to visit the Catskills, given its timeless small-town charm and natural beauty, but the 50th anniversary of Woodstock is the perfect excuse to experience the region’s growing food and drink scene, surprising art collectives and modern music venues.”

Top Catskills destinations listed by Lonely Planet include the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, St. John the Baptist, Hunter Mountain, Kaaterskill Falls, Fort Delaware Museum, Opus 40 Sculpture Park, the Saugerties Lighthouse and more.

The top listed region for 2019 was Piedmont, Italy. After the Catskills, other regions listed included Northern Peru, The Red Centre (Australia), Scotland’s Highlands, the Russian Far East, Gujarat (India), Manitoba (Canada), Normandy (France), and the Elqui Valley (Chile).
