To Live’s To Fly: Ultimate Road Trip #7

I recently had the great opportunity for six full, dawn-to-dusk, uninterrupted days of Catskills photography, and the trip was as great as it sounds. It started with a focus on Sullivan County, with 3 1/2 days along the Delaware River and also around the Monticello area, some of which, remarkably, were new for me. With a deluge of recent rains, it also allowed for some full-flow waterfall shots, including photographing six new waterfalls that I had not previously had the opportunity to shoot, and each of them were spectacular in their own way. The trip finished up with a few days in Kingston, which continues to surprise me with its breadth of subjects. Even with my list of sites to shoot, and no matter how many sites that get crossed off the list, I always seem to leave Kingston with a longer list of future subjects.

Each Catskills road trip, particularly one as long as this, begs for another road trip mix, for which I happily oblige. Over a year in the making, this one is shaping up to be a favorite among favorites. There are 19 songs, with 1 hour 18 minutes of made-for-the-road-trip music to keep you company.  A fantastic cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Ghost of Tom Joad. The poetic tales of outlaws in Claude Dallas and Wilson’s Tracks. Another perfect ballad from Texas legend Townes Van Zandt in To Live’s To Fly.

One song of the nineteen was particularly gratifying to include on the mix given its personal meaning. Growing up, my Mom had inherited an old 78 player, the type that required a few cranks of the handle to make the record turn and special, increasingly hard-to-find needles. We would play my Mom’s records over and over, with some songs always being on the request list. One of the most frequently requested songs was One Meatball by the well-known blues singer Josh White. With White’s singing about trying to find something to eat, you could feel the story, the emotion, the anguish. There was always something above the rest in his songs, making White a favorite of mine even after all these years.

Fast forward 35 years, listening to hundreds of songs, trying to find the ones to be included on this mix, I stumbled across Calvin Russell, and what an amazing find it was. In addition to his dramatic telling of his personal experiences in Crossroads, there was his fantastic remake of One Meatball. Russell’s version is certainly a very different interpretation of the original, but stays true to the story, with the same feel of story-telling, emotion and anguish, albeit with a high degree of inflation since 15 cents had now become a dollar. Every time the song plays it takes me to those special times growing up, as a family, in the living room, on a relaxing evening, just playing and enjoying some good, time-honored music.
