The historic Five Lock Walk is located at the Delaware and Hudson Canal Museum in the hamlet of High Falls, New York. The scenic walking trail follows along a restored section of towpath of the former D&H Canal.

The 108-mile D&H Canal was constructed to transport coal from northeast Pennsylvania to the Rondout District of Kingston, where it would be placed on ships for transport to New York City. With the late-19th century advent of the railroad, business on the D & H Canal declined and the company eventually ceased operations in 1899.

In 1999, the High Falls locks, 16 through 20, were cleared and refurbished, to the extent possible. These five locks were built in 1850, as part of a new route designed to accommodate increased traffic and larger canal boats.  This section also included a loading quay, still visible just past lock 16. The canal locks were constructed of Shawangunk conglomerate, an indigenous stone. Each lock measured 90 feet long, 15 feet wide, and 15 feet deep, and provided an average change in elevation of 12 1/2 feet.

The Five Lock Walk is approximately 1/2 mile long one-way, or 1 mile roundtrip, and can be accessed, free of charge, during daylight hours year-round.  The trail begins adjacent to the D&H Canal Museum, which is located at 1315 Route 213 in High Falls.

The D&H Canal (High Falls area) is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, being “historically and architecturally significant as [a] highly intact collection of commercial, residential and civic architecture, which developed around the Delaware and Hudson Canal and Aqueduct at High Falls.”
