The historic Depuy Canal House is located off Route 213 in the hamlet of High Falls in Ulster County, New York. The Depuy Canal House, a seven-bay, two-story stone house covered by a steeply pitched gable roof, was built in 1797 by Simeon Depuy, one of the leading citizens of High Falls, and was first known as the Stone House Tavern.

In the 1830s, the structure was acquired by the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company for use as an office and store, and to provide lodging for canal workers. The structure was located adjacent to Lock 16 of the D & H Canal and served its workers for decades. The 108-mile D & H Canal was constructed to transport coal from northeast Pennsylvania to the Rondout District of Kingston, where it would be placed on ships for transport to New York City. With the late-19th century advent of the railroad, business on the D & H Canal declined and the company eventually ceased operations in 1899.

Over time, the Canal House was sold several times and fell into moderate disrepair. The Canal House was then purchased in 1964 by noted chef John Novi, and after a full restoration, was opened to the public in 1969 as a popular local restaurant. The Depuy Canal House gained widespread fame in 1970 when New York Times food critic Craig Clairborne called it “one of the most interesting and best suburban restaurants in America” and gave the restaurant a four-star review, the highest rating possible. John Lennon and Yoko Ono famously dined there in the 1970s while looking for a country home in the area.

After Novi closed the doors to his restaurant in 2015, the Delaware and Hudson Canal Historical Society purchased the building. After its restoration, the society reopened the building to the public as the Delaware and Hudson Canal Museum. The Canal House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the High Falls Historic District.
